Mogila Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in the Nowa Huta District of Krakow. It was founded in 1222 by Bishop Iwo Odrowąż. This complex was built for religious reasons as well as for prestige. It was the largest and most impressive church in medieval Poland after Wawel Cathedral, and served as the Odrowąż family's burial place until the 16th century.
The architectural complex includes the stuccoed Polish Gothic church, the Basilica of the Holy Cross, which serves as the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle as well as the abbey church for the monks. There is also the Polish Renaissance-style abbot's palace, built around 1569, as well as the red-brick monastery, with a broad inner courtyard, outbuildings, vegetable garden, greenhouse, etc.
The vast and splendid Holy Cross Basilica and the adjoining Cistercian cloister, which date way back to 1266, are recognised as one the most important religious buildings in Malopolska. During the times of Renaissance the monastery was well known for its master painters and the huge interior of Holy Cross Basilica. Also the monastery library feature many fine works from the period.
Cross of Mogila
Most importantly, Holy Cross Basilica also stores the famous Cross of Mogila - the source of many miraculous legends. It is said that it have been discovered when a blacksmith's son jumped into the Wisla River to save a drowning man. After the cross was brought to the monastery, it quickly began building a reputation for miracles when it was the only part of the church's furnishings not destroyed by the fire of 1447, despite being made of wood.
The monastery is easily accessed from Plac Centralny via tram 10. Please note that you should visit it by prior arrangement only.
