Minsk is the Capital and the biggest city of Belarus. Also it's a political, economic, scientific and cultural centre of the coutnry.
Minsk is very old town. It was founded in 1067 (first mention in history records). During its history Minsk was many times completely destroyed in wars and combats, but every time it was rebuilt by its citizens.
In XII century Minsk becomes as the center of principality and one of the biggest towns of the area. From the beginning of XIV - Minsk included into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which later merged with the Polish kingdom in the new state - Rzeczpospolita.
In 1793 Belarus together with Minsk became part of the Russian Empire.
On January 1, 1919 Minsk - the capital of the newly formed the Byelorussian SSR, since 1922 part of the Soviet Union
Since 1991, the Minsk - the capital of the Republic of Belarus.
Minsk is the gateway to Belarus as soon as it have International Airport. Also Minsk is the capital of the country. Thats why Minsk is the main touristic hub in Belarus.
There are many points of interest to see. As soon as Minsk was completely destroyed during WWII, mostly city interesting in its architecture. You will not find many old buildings, but many pieces of architecture of Soviet Union period. 60-70 years-old buildings located neighbor with modern ones.
When to come?
Taking into account the climate, the best time to come to Minsk (and to Belarus in common) - is from the middle summer to middle autumn (July - October).
