One of the former names of this park - Royal Park, which explains its large and beautiful grounds, as well as the history of the Mariinsky Park.
Before park appeared, this area has not been remarkable for the richness and variety of green spaces and consisted of hills covered with bushes. By that time, there was already Mariinsky Palace stood near. Under Peter I hills around the palace were beautified and turned into a military square. In 1855, the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II, arriving in Kyiv after his coronation, ordered to build a park in English style.
In 1874 Mariinsky Park, designed as the palace ensemble, was opened. For all time of its existence, park was enriched with new and new attractions.
The last reconstruction of the park went through in 2000, the green fund is constantly updated and maintained, which has preserved many old trees, some several hundred years old.
There is a famous monument of architecture in the park — the Mariinsky Palace, where the President of Ukraine congratulate compatriots on the New Year. To the left of the park stand the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Council of Ukraine) and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
