This austere Soviet-era monument is typical of the statuary of the PRL period, if you do not see a lot of the nature of Krakow these days. The back story to this huge monument with a larger-than-life fist-raising of the workers is a strike at the local level Semperit rubber factory, which was brutally repressed by the police in March 1936, which resulted in the death of ten workers. Fifty years later, the incident has been "rehabilitated" and has inspired this overtly political monument that will be running the script and glorifies the idea of the working class rise up and fight against the capitalist oppression. Essentially, " Workers Unite!' propaganda poster cast in concrete, the names of the "martyrs" workers will not mention here, the only reference is the monument of the small, impersonal dedication "On the 50th anniversary of the events of 1936." During this time, the lyrics of The Internationale - socialist anthem, which was actually the official anthem of the USSR from 1922-1944 - are in a broad sense: Ruszymy z posad bryle swiata (We will move the world from its foundation). Hardly subtle, the fact that these heroic comrades have not been moved from their foundation is a little surprising, given that the ideology of this monument personifies've never been much in vogue in the PL and has been officially rub the policy of the state with the arrival of democracy in 1989. Fascinating, in any case, and something that you don't see a lot of more.
